History
District Court, Baran
The District of Baran was established on 10 April 1991. Following the creation of the district, the District Court, Baran initially functioned from the old court building situated near Char Murti Chauraha, in the heart of the city.
With the expansion of judicial administration and the need for more suitable infrastructure, the District Court was subsequently shifted to its present premises at Gajanpura, approximately 5 kilometres from Baran city. The present court complex was constructed at a cost of ₹143 lakhs, and the District Court commenced functioning from the new premises on 28 April 1995. Since then, the premises have continued to serve as the principal seat of judicial administration in the district.
Situated at Gajanpura, the District Court complex enjoys convenient road and railway connectivity, ensuring accessibility for litigants, members of the Bar, judicial officers, court staff and other stakeholders of the justice delivery system.
At present, eleven courts are functioning in the main court complex:
1. District & Sessions Court
2. Anti-Corruption Court
3. POCSO Court No. 1
4. POCSO Court No. 2
5. SC/ST Court
6. Additional District & Sessions Judge Court No. 1
7. Additional District & Sessions Judge Court No. 2
8. Chief Judicial Magistrate Court
9. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court
10. Civil Judge & Judicial Magistrate Court
11. Additional Civil Judge & Judicial Magistrate Court
In addition to the courts functioning in the main complex, the Family Court and the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) are functioning from separate premises, thereby catering to specialised areas of judicial work.
The District Court complex is further supported by a range of facilities aimed at making the justice delivery system more accessible, inclusive and responsive. The premises house the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), a Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centre, Advocate Chambers, E-Porta Cabin and dedicated toilet facilities for transgender persons besides other essential judicial and administrative infrastructure.
Over the years, the District Court, Baran has evolved alongside the district itself, growing from its modest beginnings near Char Murti Chauraha into a comprehensive judicial complex serving the people of Baran and its surrounding areas. The present complex stands as an important institutional centre for the administration of justice in the district.
